Is Google buying Twitter!? The rumor is certainly circulating far and wide. The news broke this morning while we were sitting and listening intently to the keynote speech by Neil Patel at Internet Marketer’s Spring Break 2009.
Is it a rumor? Maybe. Is it practical? probably. Fact is, the industry’s been bracing for an acquisition like this for some time. This entire argument started between two bloggers, which evolved into something even more dramatic….a potential titan takeover.
The probability of this takeover is shaky at best. We’re seeing quite a bit of discussion popping up in the SERPs this morning…and it will probably continue throughout the day until a Google representative comes out and denies the whole thing. But it comes down to a simple fact…twitter is one of the fastest growing social media entities on the web right now…and just like YouTube…it would make sense for Google to come out and acquire Twitter technology.
Twitter is certainly here to stay…and as more people adopt the technology, we can expect to see companies taking interest in acquisitions. A chance for Yahoo! to get back in the game? An opportunity for MSN to get a foothold in the search market once again?
We’ll see.
