Finding the right tools and learning to use them properly is one of the most fundamental SEO skills. Need to know what keywords your competitors are targeting organically? There’s a tool for it. Wondering what your link profile (or that of your competitor’s) looks like? There’s a tool for it. Curious as to how to find links using advanced search modifiers? There’s a tool for it. Get the picture?
Effective keyword research, link analysis, competitive research, linkbuilding, and site analysis comes down to applying the right tools to get the information you need to build a solid web presence. When i was first getting into the SEO game, I became absolutely overwhelmed with the spectrum of tools available. Consequently, as with most self-taught SEO’s, I knew i’d have to get organized and start building a fundamental tool set to get started.
I broke everything down into categories and then started organizing everything in my firefox bookmarks section. This proved versatile, effective, and valuable. I could quickly add to my arsenal, keep a reference section, and compile lists of resources for personal use. I’m a strong advocate of social bookmarking, but there’s just something about having your own customized tool set on demand in your browser that makes SEO so much more personal.
Here’s a list (by category of course) of some SEO tools I’ve found very helpful through the years. Feel free to drop recommendations and ideas in the comments section, and stay tuned for the official SEO Sumo Tool Set – coming May 2009.
